OmniCam is a collaboration between camera maker Indiecam and the Fraunhofer Institute. The device is a monster 360-degree mirror rig that produces a 10,000 x 2,000 pixel image, stitched together in real time ready for live streaming or broadcast. To do this it uses ten GSK-2K Indiecam cameras.
The setup is designed to be used for shoot immersive views for display in 360 degree cinemas that can be found in some theme parks. It can also be used for VR applications – a crop of the image still is capable of greater than HD vertical resolution.
It was recently used at the World Cup in Brazil and it will be interesting to see if this kind of technology takes off alongside the adoption of devices like the Oculus Rift.
