At IBC this year Panasonic were showing 4K footage shot on their upcoming Varicam 35 4K. On a 4K monitor on the show floor the images were looking pretty impressive with good looking colour reproduction. Targeted at high end TV shot in 4K as well as cinema applications.
They were also showing the camera which now looks like a real product that you can shoot on. Panasonic’s Neil Ugo claims the camera has more than 14 stops of dynamic range and he also explained that the camera has a unique dual native ISO feature. The camera has both 800 and 5000 native ISOs as well as higher ISOs that can be set in-camera.
One interesting point is that Panasonic’s engineers claim the Varicam S35 electronic viewfinder (EVF) is the best EVF in the world.
Ugo told us the price is for the Varicam 35 4K will start at slightly less than $60,000 US for camera, viewfinder and recorder. Production has already started and shipping is expected to start in October.
