Another day, another cage solution for the Sony a7S. This time from Korean maker Varavon.
Priced at $310 US the new a7S armor cage is similar in design to the company’s GH4 cage. It offers good access to all the camera’s main functions while remaining as compact as possible, lightweight and rigid. Nice touches include the leather handstrap, detachable top handle and double cable clamp protection for HDMI, audio or micro USB connections. There is also an optional rod riser support that elevates the camera to the correct position above 15mm rails should you want to use a matte box or other accessories.
It is also nice to see that they have considered users of different kinds of quick release with a universal tripod mount on the base.
This cage does not offer as much protection to the camera body as some of the other solutions out there but it trades that for increased access to functions and light weight (just 120g). It also looks like it might not allow the mounting of the MI Shoe part of the Sony XLR-K1M audio adapter which I use with my a7S – hopefully this is something we can check out at the IBC show next week.
