Reported by Mat Gallagher:
The 7th of January saw National Photojournalist Photographers Association (NPPA) once again open its Best of Photojournalism competition for entries. Promoted as ‘the contest designed for photojournalists by photojournalists’, the competition attracts professionals from around the globe in still, video, multimedia and editing. The 2013 competition includes four main categories with up to 29 subdivisions for specific awards. This year sees the addition of three categories in the stills photography section, covering the Olympics, the Road to Office, and Features, while Television photojournalism has been incorporated into a broader Video category. Entry into the competition is free and via the NPPA website where you can also see last year’s winners. Though there are no restrictions on when video footage was shot, the entries must have been broadcast or posted in 2012 and it is worth taking a full look through the rules before submitting. You will need to be quick though; the deadline for best video is 25th January, while all other categories have until 1st February.
Today (10th Jan) is also the last day for submissions to the multimedia category for the 2013 World Press Photo Awards. Entries for the still photo section of the competition have until 17th January to submit. The winners of last year’s multimedia category received mixed reviews, as we reported here. Interestingly though, the rules and guidelines no longer require stills to accompany video work, merely that the entry include ‘photography and/or film in combination with (but not limited to) animation, graphics, illustrations, sound, or text’. The multimedia section is further divided into three sections: online short, online documentary, and interactive documentary, with a cash prize of €1500 for each winner. Entry is free and via the World Press Photo website.
