DJI have unveiled a new addition to the company’s Phantom range of UAVs – the Phantom 4 Advanced. The new Phantom 4 Advanced model has the ability to record 4K video at 60 frames per second – though apart from that there isn’t a lot of difference between it and the Phantom 4 Pro.
Same sensor as Phantom 4 Pro
The Phantom 4 Advanced looks like it is using the same one inch, 20-megapixel sensor with a 24mm f/2.8 lens as the Phantom 4 Pro. The Advanced version has more powerful video processing to enable H.264 4K at 60fps or H.265 4K at 30fps capture, unfortunately the bitrate is still only 100Mbps. The Phantom 4 Pro is able to record 60fps, but at a maximum resolution of 2.7K at 80Mbps. DJI claim the Phantom 4 Advanced’s new camera provides excellent optical performance, capturing footage in high dynamic range with increased image detail.
Phantom 4 Advanced: evolution not revolution
Similar to the Phantom 4 Pro, it comes with many key intelligent features that allow smooth automatic flight modes, including Draw, ActiveTrack, TapFly, Gesture and Tripod. The drone is also equipped with the FlightAutonomy system made up of five vision sensors, forward-facing obstacle avoidance system, dual-band satellite positioning (GPS and GLONASS), and ultrasonic rangefinders. According to DJI the Phantom 4 Advanced is able to hover precisely in places without GPS and fly in complex environments.
Advanced, not Pro
Unlike the Phantom 4 Pro, the Phantom 4 Advanced does not have rear vision sensors and two infrared sensors in its FlightAutonomy system. Also, its remote controller does not support the 5.8 GHz frequency band, and Tapfly Backward has been removed.
Phantom 4 Advanced Plus
The Phantom 4 Advanced+ version offers a 5.5-inch 1080p screen integrated into the controller. DJI claim that the screen is more than twice as bright as conventional smart devices, making it suitable for outdoor use. The Phantom 4 Advanced also has the same 128GB microSD card capacity as the Phantom 4 Pro. The flight time is a claimed 30 minutes.
Farewell Phantom 4
With the announcement of the Phantom 4 Advanced, the original Phantom 4 model will be discontinued on April 30, 2017. DJI will continue to provide after sales support to Phantom 4 customers and their aircraft will still be able to be flown using the DJI GO 4 app.
The US retail price of the Phantom 4 Advanced and Phantom 4 Advanced+ will be $1,349 US and $1,649 US respectively.
